The pannier's greatest drawback is its mounting system, which relies on two hooks with hard plastic sleeves, and a completely inadequate,slender knotted bungee cord with a cheap metal hook, capped by a piece of plastic that falls off immediately. I'm not sure that the case is totally to blame for its having been stolen when I left it on the bike because of the difficulty I experienced in mounting it securely. In order to stay on when the bike goes over a bump, the pannier relies on an interference fit between the hooks and the frame of the rear rack, which is supplied by a bunching up of the cheap plastic hook covers. The supplied bungee cord is too long to be of use, and in fact represents a hazard for wrapping in the rear hub. Thus, I found it necessary to improvise an attachment to the eye on the base of the rear rack, which I didn't want to remove when I parked it at a university rack. I doubt whether the person who stole the pannier will be glad for this particular... I'm a full-time bike commuter and have built a trailer for large shopping trips and hauling. I bought a pair of these panniers for quick runs to the store for one or two bags' worth of groceries when hauling the trailer would be a burden. These panniers are large, well-reinforced, look good, and are multi-functional. I use a single pannier as my lunch tote, which I haul on my bike rack along with my briefcase. In this way, if I need to swing by a store on my way home, I've got extra room for sundry goods or a few odds and ends at the grocery store.A few things to note: this is a rather large pannier, so depending on your bike's geometry and the type of rack you use (as well as the size of your feet [I'm size 10]), your heel clearance may be limited. I position my pannier as far back on the rack as I can and it works fine. Also, the hooks that go over the rack are metal--a nice feature for durability--but they're not coated with plastic or anything. Consider wrapping them... If you're looking for a tough bike bag that won't give in under the weight of all your stuff, this is it. I use mine to schlep my work gear twice a day, every day and it has stood tough. It is also somewhat water resistant.The steel pannier hooks are especially good as you don't have to worry about their breaking. The only downside is that the zipper to the front small pocket was not sewn on well. |
