I had read to go with the 4.5 degree ones first then the 9 degrees, but I opted for these to start with. I like the flexibility and adaptability afforded by the screw and washer system. The white Teflon bi-material takes one heck of a beating but the sides of the clip aren't as resilient. On an older pair of mine, the outer edge near the screw hole lost a shark bite of plastic due to a hard stop. I find the rubber stopper in the center of the cleat wears quite a bit in the red 9 degree float version (I guess I wiggle my feet in the pedals quite a bit).The ENTIRE cleat gets well eaten by asphalt if you decide not to come to a complete stop and waggle your foot out on the pavement to smooth any stopping. So... stop FULLY then drop your foot to make contact with the pavement. Also consider cleat covers for bumbling around off of the bike these SHOULD be sold in a package all together... but they aren't.
